Study Abroad Experience in Berlin

This blog entry was submitted by Sofia de Lozada, who studied abroad in Berlin, Germany.

“Hi, my name is Sofia and I am a junior studying International Business at St. Edward’s University. I am also from Bolivia. During my time at St. Edwards, I have heard many great things about the study abroad program the school offers and wanted to test it myself. I decided to study in Berlin, Germany and was able to really understand my school’s motto of Take On Your World. The program I participated in was the CIEE Global Institute which offers students the opportunity to study abroad in multiple cities within a semester such as London, Rome and Paris. While I chose to stay in Berlin, I would not change a thing.  I was given the chance to take business classes taught by some of the most knowledgeable and worldly professors I have ever met. With the help of St. Edward’s University and CIEE, I have had one of the best experiences here in Germany.

I decided to study abroad in Germany because I had previously been to Germany in 2012 and done an exchange through my high school. I stayed with a German family in Braunschweig.sofia I was able to meet so many wonderful people and my experience was amazing. I decided to come back so that I could expand my knowledge about the German language and culture. I also really wanted to learn more about the economy in Germany, as my major is International Business and Germany has one of the strongest economies in the world, I thought Berlin would be the perfect place to learn everything I wanted.

I learned about the major startup culture in Berlin which was so fascinating. It is a requirement of CIEE that the classes students take get us outside the classroom so I have had the opportunity to go to different places within Berlin with my classes. For example, my class had the chance to meet an entrepreneur in the city and test out his new product which was really great. While being able to expand my knowledge of the German business market as well as take classes within other disciplines that interest me. I had the chance to also take a European Immigration course with excursions to the famous Tempelhofer Airport and other interesting places within the city. With the current climate around immigration, it was really great to learn about the history of immigrants and migrants through the lens of Europe and Germany in specific.
My experiences in Berlin are all thanks to St. Edward’s and their encouragement of students to study abroad. I knew I always wanted to come back to Germany and SEU’s partnership with CIEE made that possible for me.sofia3

As far as my personal reflection on my time here, I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I’ve had the chance to meet some really great people while also getting the chance to do some traveling within Europe. During my time in Berlin, I’ve also been able to go to Belgium, Geneva, Amsterdam and Poland. Traveling is a big passion of mine, evident by me deciding to study in America. My time spent abroad has helped expand my knowledge of the world and challenged me to think in different ways. I feel so much more confident and really understand the benefits of being fully submerged in a culture like I was in Germany. I highly recommend that if you’ve got the time, you take advantage of SEU’s study abroad program and Take On Your World. It will be one of the best decisions of your college career.”
